THE REASON THAT WE SOLICITED A FIRM, UM, IN ORDER TO DO THIS PROJECT IS BECAUSE IT WAS IDENTIFIED IN OUR PARKS, RECREATION, AND OPEN SPACE MASTER PLAN THAT OUR RESIDENTS WANTED TO SEE AN ACTIVATED PARK. THERE WERE MANY REFERENCES TO BUILD A DECK PARK, UM, OVER THE TOLLWAY, GIVE US A CLYDE WARREN PARK. UM, AND WHAT WE REALIZED IS WE REALLY HAD THE BONES OF AN ACTIVATED PARK SITTING HERE IN ADDISON CIRCLE PARK. WE JUST NEEDED TO ACTIVATE IT AND PROGRAM IT, UM, IN AN APPROPRIATE WAY. WE'RE NOT LOOKING TO COPY CLYDE WARREN PARK. WE'RE LOOKING TO FIND THE ANSWER FOR WHAT'S RIGHT FOR ADDISON AND WHAT'S APPROPRIATE FOR ADDISON. BUT OUR GOAL IS TO HAVE MANY OPPORTUNITIES OF THINGS TO DO IN THE PARK AT ANY GIVEN TIME AND FOR OUR RESIDENTS, AND TO ATTRACT PEOPLE TO WANNA COME TO ADDISON, ENJOY SOME TIME IN OUR PARKS, AND ALSO ENJOY SOME TIME WITH OUR BUSINESSES WHILE THEY'RE HERE. WE'RE GONNA SHARE THE RESULTS OF THAT SURVEY WITH YOU THAT HAS HELPED INFORM THE DIAGRAMS THAT YOU'RE SEEING TONIGHT, WHICH IS JANICE SAID ARE CONVERSATION STARTERS. THERE ARE WAYS TO GET YOUR IDEAS FLOWING. THEY'RE ABOUT ADJACENCIES, THEY'RE ABOUT THE ELEMENTS THAT COULD ENHANCE YOUR EXPERIENCE IN THE PARK. IF WE WERE TO THINK ABOUT THE PARK AS A BLANK CANVAS AND WE WERE TO NOT BE CONSTRAINED BY THE CANVAS THAT WE SEE OUT THERE, WHAT COULD IT LOOK LIKE? HOW DO WE USE IT? WE SAW A TREMENDOUS UPTICK IN RESPONSES TO OUR SURVEY BASED ON THEIR HARD, THEIR HARD WORK TO MAKE SURE THE COMMUNITY KNOWS THAT THIS PROCESS IS GOING ON. WE'VE HAD 174 RESPONSES TO OUR FIRST SURVEY. WE HAVE MET TWICE WITH THE, WELL THREE TIMES NOW WITH THE ADVISORY COMMITTEE THAT'S BEEN APPOINTED TO LEAD AND SHEPHERD THIS EFFORT. UH, THERE'VE BEEN MULTIPLE SOCIAL MEDIA POSTS WE'VE BEEN IN, INCLUDED IN NEWSLETTERS THAT ARE GOING OUT THROUGH THE RECREATION, THROUGH THE REC DEPARTMENT. SO A LOT OF EFFORT BEHIND THE SCENES TO MAKE SURE THAT THE WORD IS GETTING OUT, THAT WE'RE DOING THIS PROCESS. AND WE NEED YOU TOO, TO SHARE THE WORD WITH YOUR FRIENDS, WITH YOUR NEIGHBORS. ABOUT 65 OF THE RESPONDENTS ARE FROM OR CONSIDER THEMSELVES ADDISON RESIDENTS. ABOUT 10% WERE COMING BECAUSE THEY WERE GOING TO A SPECIAL EVENT. WE THOUGHT THAT WAS AN INTERESTING IMPACT BECAUSE THEY WERE HERE DURING TASTE. AND SO, OR THEY'RE COMING BECAUSE OF YOUR SIGNATURE EVENTS. 21, CONSIDER THEMSELVES A VISITOR TO THE PARK. SO THEY'RE COMING WITH THEIR FRIENDS TO A YOGA CLASS OR THEY'RE COMING WITH THEIR FRIENDS WHO HAPPEN TO LIVE HERE, BUT THEY'RE PARTICIPATING BECAUSE THEY'VE ENJOYED THEIR EXPERIENCE OR THEY MIGHT WANNA COME BACK FOR AN ENHANCED EXPERIENCE. AND THEN WHAT DID THAT FIRST QUESTION ASK? IT'S, WHAT EVENTS ARE YOU GOING TO TASTE BY AND FAR, NUMBER ONE. AND THEN, YOU KNOW, VERY FEW PEOPLE WERE COMING HERE WITHOUT COMING FOR A BIG EVENT. THAT'S ONE OF THE OBJECTIVES THAT THE PARKS MASTER PLAN IDENTIFIED. LET'S USE THIS ASSET, THIS REAL ESTATE ASSET THAT YOU HAVE TO BRING PEOPLE TO ADDISON. AND YOU HAVE ANOTHER ASSET THAT'S ABOUT TO COME ONLINE WITH YOUR NEW TRANSIT ORIENTED DEVELOPMENT AND THE DART STATION. SO THE INFLUX OF PEOPLE INTO ADDISON IS VERY, IS IMMINENT AND IT'S REAL. SO HOW DO YOU RECEIVE THEM? HOW DO YOU PUT YOUR BEST FOOT FORWARD? HOW DOES THIS BECOME THE FRONT YARD FOR THE TOWN OF ADDISON? AND THEN HOW DOES IT CONNECT TO YOUR TRAILS AND ALL OF THE OTHER MULTIMODAL TRANSPORTATION THAT YOU HAVE GOING ON? AND SO THEN WE ASK PEOPLE TO RANK IN ORDER OF PREFERENCE, THE PROGRAM AMENITIES, THE THINGS THAT YOU WANNA HAVE IN THE PARK. THE CENTRAL GARDEN TERRACES WAS NUMBER ONE, YOUR LAWN AREAS ONE, NUMBER TWO, I'M NOT GONNA GO THROUGH ALL OF THEM, BUT YOU'LL SEE KIND OF THE, [00:10:01] THE RANKING IN ORDER OF IMPORTANCE OF WHAT'S GOING ON IN, IN THE PARK AND WHAT PEOPLE WOULD LIKE TO SEE. SO NATURAL, GREEN, BEAUTIFUL PARK SPACE, YOU KNOW, THAT'S, THAT'S WHAT WE'RE SEEING FROM THIS. THAT'S ONE OF THOSE HIERARCHY OF NEEDS. AND THEN WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE IN A REIMAGINED PARK? IT WAS INTERESTING THAT FOOD TRUCKS WAS NUMBER ONE. FOOD TRUCKS DON'T HAVE TO BE AN EVERYDAY EXPERIENCE. THEY CAN BE HERE TO SUPPORT BIG EVENTS. THEY CAN BE HERE WHEN YOU'RE HAVING ACTIVITIES. WE WANNA MAKE SURE THAT THE RESTAURANTS AND THE RETAIL THAT'S SURROUNDING THE PARK ARE THRIVING, ACTIVATING THE PARK, INCREASING YOUR FOOT TRAFFIC IN THE PARK WILL HELP DO THAT. AND THEN COMPLIMENTING THOSE ACTIVITIES AND EVENTS WITH ANCILLARY SERVICES LIKE FOOD TRUCKS, HAVING THEM SERVE THE PARK, UH, A PARK CAFE. SO FOOD AND BEVERAGE WERE OUR TOP TWO CHOICES, AND THOSE ARE GREAT WAYS TO ACTIVATE THE PARK. WE ALWAYS TALK ABOUT A LAYERED APPROACH TO ACTIVATING THE PARK. IT'S NOT JUST HOST A YOGA CLASS, IT'S HOST A YOGA CLASS AND BRING A JUICE CART AND HAVE MUSIC IN THE PARK. IT'S A MULTITUDE OF, OF EXPERIENCES THAT DIFFERENT PEOPLE IN THE GROUP CAN HAVE TOGETHER. I MAY NOT WANNA DO YOGA, BUT I WANNA HAVE A SMOOTHIE. WELL, WE CAN ALL DO THAT AT THE SAME TIME, OR YOU CAN EXTEND YOUR STAY BECAUSE YOU'RE COMING TO YOGA AND THEN YOU HAVE SOMETHING TO DO AFTERWARDS. SO WE'LL TALK A LOT ABOUT ACTIVATION AS A PRIORITY NEED OR RECOGNIZING THAT AS AN OPPORTUNITY FOR THE DESIGN OF THIS PARK. UM, TWO, TWO CATEGORIES HAD TIES, SHADE, STRUCTURE AND YEAR-ROUND ACTIVITIES, DOG PARK AND GAMES. WE RECOGNIZE THERE ARE LOTS OF DOGS WHO ARE BEING WALKED IN THE PARK ON A DAILY BASIS. THERE ARE ALSO DOG PARKS VERY CLOSE BY. SO WHAT IS THE OPPORTUNITY TO ACKNOWLEDGE THAT DOGS ARE USING THE PARK BUT NOT NECESSARILY HAVING A DOG PARK IN ADDISON CIRCLE PARK? SO THAT'S ONE OF THOSE DESIGN CHALLENGES THAT WE WANNA THINK ABOUT. AND THEN YOUR ACTIVITIES AND EVENTS THAT YOU WOULD LIKE TO ATTEND. OTHER THINGS, YOU KNOW, YOUR SIGNATURE EVENTS ARE AMAZING. LOTS OF TOWNS DON'T HAVE ONE. YOU'VE GOT THREE. AND I THINK THEY'RE REALLY FURTHERING THE BRAND OF ADDISON, THE BRAND PROMISE. BUT ADDITIONAL THINGS THAT WE COULD ADD, MAKE IT EASY TO HOST FARMER'S. MARKETS, HAVE CONCERTS, MOVIE NIGHTS. WE'RE NOT SAYING THESE ARE TICKETED EVENTS. THESE ARE NOT THINGS THAT YOU WOULD DO EVERY DAY. THESE ARE SPECIALTY KINDS OF EVENTS THAT COULD BE PART OF A CURATED CALENDAR. WE ALSO SAY YOU HAVE TO HAVE BEAUTIFUL PASSIVE SPACES, BEAUTIFUL PLACES TO JUST SIT AND RELAX AND ENJOY NATURE. TAKE A DEEP BREATH, NOT BE INUNDATED WITH THINGS GOING ON AROUND YOU. AND THAT IS THE FLEXIBILITY THAT YOU'RE AFFORDED BY HAVING THE AMOUNT OF SPACE THAT YOU HAVE IN THE PARK. AND THEN THE BENEFITS, UM, PICNICKING, THAT WAS ONE OF THE THINGS THAT WE HEARD. UH, WE GOT A LOT OF INPUT ON JUST A PLACE FOR DAILY RECREATION, RELAXATION. PEOPLE ARE WALKING THE LOOP. THEY'RE NOT WALKING THROUGH THE GRASS, THEY'RE WALKING AROUND THE PARK RIGHT NOW. SO YOU'LL SEE IN ONE OF OUR PROGRAM DIAGRAMS, WE ACTUALLY CALLED IT THE LOOP. LET'S ACKNOWLEDGE THAT THAT'S AN IMPORTANT, UH, DAILY USE OF THE PARK. SO WE WANT THAT TO BE ABLE TO CONTINUE IN A MEANINGFUL WAY. UM, DRIVE FOOT TRAFFIC FOR SURROUNDING BUSINESSES. WE SAID THAT WAS, THAT IS A RESULT OF ACTIVATION. ANOTHER RESULT OF ACTIVATION IS BEING ABLE TO DRIVE REVENUE SO THAT THE TOWN CAN PAY FOR THESE OTHER ENHANCEMENTS AND OPPORTUNITIES. SO FOOD TRUCKS COULD BE A SOURCE OF REVENUE BACK TO COVERING THE COST OF THE PARK, UM, HAVING RENTALS, THIRD PARTIES COMING IN AND DOING THINGS FROM TIME TO TIME AND NOT TAKING OVER THE PARK, BUT HAVING SMALLER AREAS WHERE THEY MIGHT BE ABLE TO HAVE A CORPORATE OUTING OR A RECEPTION OR EVEN A WEDDING. YOU KNOW, THERE'S LOTS OF CALLS TO HAVE WEDDINGS, SO LET'S THINK ABOUT THE INFRASTRUCTURE THAT MIGHT BE NEEDED TO DO THAT. AND THEN WE WANTED TO SHOW YOU SOME OF THE COMMENTS. UH, WE READ THEM ALL. WE CATALOG THEM ALL. WE ARE NOT GONNA GO THROUGH EVERY ONE OF THEM, BUT WE HAD SOME GENERAL THEMES THAT STARTED COMING THROUGH. UM, FARMER'S MARKET CAME THROUGH TIME AND TIME AGAIN, A PLACE FOR CLASSES, SMALLER ACTIVITIES. WE TALK ABOUT DAILY, WEEKLY, MONTHLY THINGS TO DO, NOT JUST HAVING IT FOR THE BIG EVENTS, CONNECTING WITH OUR NEIGHBORS. UM, THE IDEA OF A DOG CANTINA. W WE CALL IT A MUTTS A BARK BAR. IN ADDITION TO THE SURVEY, WE WERE GATHERING FEEDBACK, UH, THROUGH EMAILS, THROUGH PHONE CALLS, THROUGH POPUPS THAT THE PARKS DEPARTMENT IS DOING. UM, WE HEARD ABOUT LIGHTING, YOU KNOW, THAT CAME THROUGH A COUPLE OF TIMES, MAKING SURE THAT THE PARK FEELS SAFE, IT'S WELL LIT, UM, MAKING SURE THAT IT IS ACTIVELY MANAGED, THAT YOU FEEL SAFE IN THE PARK WHEN YOU'RE COMING THROUGH, PERHAPS ON YOUR WAY HOME IN THE EVENING. UH, DIFFERENT TIMES OF DAY. ART WAS ANOTHER THEME THAT RESONATED. WHETHER IT BE TEMPORARY ART OR ART THAT'S INTEGRATED INTO THE, INTO THE DESIGN. UM, AND THEN THE RELATIONSHIP WITH THE CONFERENCE CENTER, THIS BUILDING. AND SO WHILE WE'RE NOT THINKING ABOUT CHANGING THE FOOTPRINT OF THIS BUILDING OR THE USES IN INSIDE THIS BUILDING, OUR TASK WITH YOUR HELP IS TO IMAGINE WHAT GOES ON AROUND IT. YOU COULD ALSO HAVE TWO EVENTS HAPPENING SIMULTANEOUSLY, RIGHT? UM, SO WE ORIENT THE PERFORMANCE PAVILION IN A DIFFERENT LOCATION AND THAT CHANGES ALL OF THE ADJACENCIES WE'LL SEE, UM, THROUGH THE PARK AND, AND REALLY KIND OF SETS A DIFFERENT, A DIFFERENT, UM, PERSPECTIVE. UM, ON THE SOUTH SIDE, WE HAVE A PROMENADE ALONG THE SOUTHERN EDGE THAT PROVIDES A DIFFERENT TRANSITION FROM THE ROAD INTO THE PARK. UM, WE'VE GOT THE CHILDREN'S PLAY AREA AND IN BETWEEN THAT WE'VE GOT A RESTROOM, A SHADE STRUCTURE, AND A PICNIC AREA AND A FOOD AND BEVERAGE. SO THAT WHOLE SOUTHERN EDGE IS REALLY FOCUSED ON REALLY ACTIVATING THAT, THAT SOUTHERN EDGE AND DRAWING PEOPLE INTO THE PARK. UM, AS WE MOVE NORTH, WE'VE GOT, AS I MENTIONED, THE PERFORMANCE PAVILION AND LAWNS. WE HAVE A LITTLE AMPHITHEATER KIND OF TUCKED IN NORTH OF THE CHILDREN'S PLAY AREA. YOU COULD IMAGINE A STORY TIME HAPPENING HERE AND WE'RE USING THE NATURAL TOPOGRAPHY OF THE SITE TO ACCOMPLISH THAT. UM, AS WE CONTINUE NORTH, WE'VE GOT A SHADY GROVE EDGE TO THE LAWN THAT PROVIDES A LITTLE BIT OF A BUFFER, AND IT'S ONE OF OUR, WOULD BE ONE OF OUR GOALS TO MAINTAIN AS MANY OF THE BEAUTIFUL EXISTING TREES AS POSSIBLE. YOU GUYS HAVE SUCH A GREAT ASSET, UM, ALREADY EXISTING IN THE PARK. UM, ON THE NORTH SIDE WE HAVE A, RATHER THAN HAVING FITNESS NODES ALONG A PATH, WE HAVE A FITNESS ZONE, UM, FOR, FOR, UM, FITNESS EQUIPMENT OR ACTIVITIES ALL RELATED TO EXERCISE. WE'VE GOT THE FOOD AND BEVERAGE ON THE NORTH AND IN, IN THIS PARTICULAR SCHEME, WE'VE GOT THE WATER FEATURE AGAIN, BROKEN UP INTO TWO DIFFERENT WATER FEATURES. WE HAVE ONE THAT IS PART OF THE ENTRY TO THE PARK FROM THE CONFERENCE CENTER SIDE. AND THEN WE'VE GOT WHAT WE'RE CALLING THE BOAT POND ON THE, UM, FAR EASTERN SIDE. SO LIKE CENTRAL PARK, IT'S A ACTIVITY THAT DRAWS PEOPLE FROM ALL OVER AND IT'S A REALLY UNIQUE, UM, A UNIQUE FEATURE THAT IS NOT IN ANY PARKS THAT I KNOW OF IN NORTH TEXAS. SO IT COULD BE AN INTERESTING DRAW. UM, ON THE NORTH SIDE WE'VE MAINTAINED SOME BOTANIC GARDENS AND IN THIS VERSION WE'VE SHRUNK DOWN THE GAME COURT TERRACES TO JUST TWO, UH, OF THE TERRACES. SO THAT'S ONE OF THOSE THINGS THAT WE'D LIKE TO HEAR FROM YOU. HOW MANY IS THE RIGHT NUMBER? UM, AND THEN AS WE CONTINUE TO MOVE AROUND, WE'VE GOT THE RESTROOM AND JAVA AND HOPS, UM, ALL WITH THESE BEAUTIFUL SHADED GROVES AND, UH, BUFFER SPACES. SO THAT'S OUR THREE DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVES ON HOW TO DESIGN A PARK. UM, AND THERE'S MANY WAYS TO DO THIS. AND SO AS WE GO OUTSIDE IN JUST A MOMENT, AND I'LL LET TARA PREPARE US FOR THAT. UM, WE WANTED THESE TO BE CONVERSATION STARTERS AND WAYS TO THINK ABOUT IT SO THAT YOU HAVE SOME, HAVE SOME [00:35:01] RUNWAY BEFORE WE ASK YOU TO JUST DESIGN A PARK . WELL, AND IT, IT'S, WE SEE THESE KINDS OF SPACES ALL OVER THE COUNTRY ON A DAILY BASIS. IF YOUR ONLY FRAME OF REFERENCE FOR A PARK IS A TRADITIONAL, UM, NEIGHBORHOOD PARK WITH SWINGS AND A SLIDE AND MAYBE A MERRY-GO-ROUND, YOU DON'T HAVE THE SAME OPPORTUNITY TO DREAM BIG. YOU'RE NOT, THAT DOES NOT, IS NOT COME NATURALLY TO YOU. SO ON THE TABLE ARE IMAGES AND IT MAY SAY WORK POD, AND THEN YOU'LL SEE AN IMAGE OF WHAT WE THINK THAT COULD LOOK LIKE IT, IT COULD SAY ACTIVITY LAWN. IT COULD SAY FLEXIBLE LAWN. IT MAY SAY CHILDREN'S PLAY AND YOU'RE SEEING PICTURES OF WOODEN TEETER TOTTERS OR YOU'RE SEEING CLIMBING THAT LOOKS LIKE A SCULPTURE. WE THINK THAT PLAY SHOULD BE ARTISTIC, IT SHOULD BE NATURAL, IT SHOULD BE NON-PRESCRIPTIVE. CHILDREN SHOULD USE THEIR IMAGINATION, ADULTS SHOULD USE THEIR IMAGINATION.
